Polycythemia vera is a rare blood cancer that causes your body to make too many red blood cells. Having too many red blood cells makes your blood thick, slowing down blood flow through your body. This can cause severe health problems, such as blood clots, heart attacks, and strokes.

Most people with this condition require a procedure called phlebotomy, where blood is removed from a vein. Removing blood helps to lower the number of red blood cells. But phlebotomy procedures can be very inconvenient and time-consuming.

Mimrylo is a new kind of medicine called a hepcidin mimetic. It acts like a natural hormone (hepcidin) that controls the movement of iron in your body. This medicine helps to lower the amount of iron available to make red blood cells, which reduces the production of red blood cells.

Why Was It Approved?

The approval of Mimrylo came from a clinical study called VERIFY. The study tested 293 adults with polycythemia vera. These patients were already taking other medicines to treat their condition but still needed frequent phlebotomies.

In the study, half of the patients got weekly Mimrylo shots under the skin, while the other half got a placebo. A placebo is a shot with no active medicine. Between weeks 20 and 32 of the study, 77% of patients receiving Mimrylo did not need any phlebotomies. In comparison, only 33% of patients receiving the placebo were able to avoid phlebotomies.

Patients taking Mimrylo needed fewer blood draws overall. They also reported feeling less tired. The most common side effects in the trial were skin reactions at the injection site and low red blood cell counts.

What Should You Know About Taking Mimrylo?

Mimrylo is a shot given under the skin into your stomach area, thigh, or upper arm. A healthcare provider will teach you or a caregiver how to give the shot at home. Most patients use it once a week.

The most common side effects are skin reactions at the injection site, such as pain, redness, swelling, and itching. You can use ice packs, steroid creams, or pain relievers to ease skin reactions.Another common side effect is low red blood cell counts, known as anemia. Mimrylo can also raise your platelet levels. Your healthcare provider will check your blood levels with regular tests.Mimrylo can harm a fetus. Your healthcare provider may give you a pregnancy test before you start treatment. Females who can get pregnant should use effective birth control during treatment and for 30 days after the final dose. You should not breastfeed during treatment and for 30 days after the final dose.

What Is Mimrylo and How Does It Work?
