It works by helping the kidneys remove extra salt and water from the body through urine. Removing extra fluid helps ease swelling and reduces pressure on the heart and kidneys. This medicine comes in a single-use autoinjector that delivers the drug under the skin of the belly in about 10 seconds. It gives patients an at-home option to treat fluid buildup without needing an IV at a hospital. Furoscix ReadyFlow is not meant for long-term use. Patients should switch back to oral water pills as soon as their health care provider says it is safe to do so.

Why Was It Approved?

The FDA approved Furoscix ReadyFlow based on a clinical study comparing it to intravenous (IV) furosemide. The study tested 19 healthy adults to measure how the drug moves through the body. The main goal was to see if the autoinjector gave similar levels of medicine as an IV infusion used in a hospital. The study showed that Furoscix ReadyFlow delivered comparable amounts of medicine into the bloodstream as IV furosemide. Patients using the autoinjector had equal urine output, salt loss, and potassium loss over six, eight, and 12 hours compared to those given IV treatment. Furoscix ReadyFlow was generally well-tolerated in the study. Its safety findings were similar to the known side effects of oral and IV furosemide.

What Do I Need to Know?

Furoscix ReadyFlow is injected under the skin of the stomach area only. Select a spot at least 2 inches away from the belly button. Rotate the injection spot each time. Pull off the blue cap, press the device firmly against the skin, and hold it until the yellow rod fills the viewing window, which takes about 10 seconds. If the window does not fill completely or if you lift the device too soon, you may not get a full dose. Call your health care provider if this happens before trying another dose.

The most common side effects are skin reactions where the shot is given. These include pain, redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection spot. Over time, Furoscix ReadyFlow can cause a severe loss of body water and minerals. Signs of dehydration include a dry mouth, thirst, muscle cramps, nausea, vomiting, or dark yellow urine. It may also cause temporary low blood pressure, making you feel dizzy when standing up. Getting up slowly can help prevent dizziness. This drug can increase blood sugar levels, cause ringing in the ears, or make skin more sensitive to sunlight. Tell your health care provider about all health conditions, including if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have trouble urinating.

The FDA has approved Furoscix ReadyFlow (furosemide subcutaneous injection) for adults with chronic heart failure or chronic kidney disease. It is used to treat edema, which is fluid buildup in the body.
