It is approved for the temporary relief of minor aches and pains such as headaches, backaches, muscle aches, toothaches, menstrual cramps, and minor arthritis pain.

This medicine combines two well-known pain relievers into one pill. The first ingredient is acetaminophen, which works quickly to block pain signals in your body. The second ingredient is naproxen, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It reduces swelling and pain for longer relief.

Together, these ingredients can provide both fast and longer-lasting pain relief. Since this medication is available over the counter (OTC), you can buy it without a prescription.

Why Was It Approved?

The FDA approved Tylenol with Naproxen based on evidence from multiple clinical studies. These studies tested how well the combination worked compared to taking either drug by itself.

These studies showed that taking the two pain relievers together provided better pain relief than taking acetaminophen alone or naproxen alone. The combination helped to relieve pain for up to 12 hours. No unexpected safety issues were reported during the trials.

What Do I Need to Know Before Taking It?

Tylenol with Naproxen is a tablet that should be swallowed whole with a full glass of water. If it causes an upset stomach, you can take it with food or milk. Take the medication as directed on the label for pain relief. You should not take more than what is recommended on the label. If you need to use this medicine for more than 10 days, you should speak with a health care provider.

Do not take this product with any other medicines that contain acetaminophen. You should also not drink more than two alcoholic beverages per day while you are taking this medicine. Too much acetaminophen, or combining acetaminophen with too much alcohol, can increase your risk of liver damage.

Because this medicine contains an NSAID (naproxen), it can increase the risk of stomach bleeding, ulcers, or stomach tears. This risk is higher if you are over the age of 60, have had stomach ulcers before, or are taking certain medicines. If you have black stools, bloody vomit, or new stomach pains that do not go away, stop the medicine and speak with a health care provider right away.

NSAIDs can also increase the risk of heart attack, heart failure, and stroke. If you have heart disease, high blood pressure, or a history of stroke, speak with a health care provider before using this medicine. Seek medical help right away if you have chest pain, trouble breathing, weakness in one part of the body, slurred speech, or leg swelling.

Stop taking the medicine and contact a health care provider if you get a skin rash, redness, or blisters. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your health care provider before using this medication. It may not be safe to use naproxen while breastfeeding or at certain times during pregnancy.

What Is Tylenol With Naproxen and How Does It Work?
